Finding the Finish Line: Staying on Task with a Quilt Project (When Life is Already Full)
Let’s be real - starting a new quilt project is exciting, but finishing it? That’s where things get tricky.. As a single mum juggling a full-time job, I know how hard it can be to carve out time and energy for creativity when your to-do list is already a mile long (and someone needs a snack. Always.)
Quilting is a labour of love — but it *is* a labour. It takes time, effort, and focus… three things that feel in short supply some days. If you’ve ever started a quilt and watched it quietly migrate to the “WIP pile,” you’re not alone. Here are a few things I’ve found helpful for staying on track. (Without burning out)
1. Break It Into Bite-Sized Chunks
Instead of waiting for a big window of time that may never come, give yourself tiny, achievable goals. One night might be just for cutting. Another might be half an hour of chain piecing. Forward is forward, even if it's slow.
2. Step Away When You Need To
If you hit a wall (hello, never-ending rows of HSTs), take a break. Walk away, make a cuppa, or switch to a fun “palette cleanser” project — something quick and playful to reset your creative energy. You don’t have to quit — just breathe.
3. Celebrate Small Wins
Finished a block? Pat yourself on the back. Joined all your rows? That’s a moment! Mark your progress and recognise the effort — because it’s no small feat to make beautiful things in the middle of a busy, messy life.
Quilting doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. Some days you’ll do lots. Some days, nothing. But when you show up for your creativity, even in little ways, you’re honouring something deeply important — yourself. And that’s worth every stitch.
